In as much as I'm a civilian who doesn't have an idea how the military system works, the headline is clear enough that 54 able-bodied young men are going to be murdered in cold blood.
Here is what I think..
First of all, what did they do to deserve a death a penalty? Truth is, it is the government's responsibility to ensure that their soldiers are mobilized adequately with sufficient fire-power to counter terrorism.
You cannot give your soldiers little or insufficient arms and expect them to win a 50/50 battle against the dreaded boko haram terrorist group. A sect who are ready to die in numbers as long as they murder innocent people.
So, these soldiers were disappointed. They felt let down. They had the feeling that the government were just sending them out to be slaughtered like lambs so they reacted.
I accept with the authorities that they over-reacted by firing at the captain's armoured vehicle but I clearly think justice can still be tampered with mercy.
Look at it from this point of view..
We've been battling with boko haram for years now but winning the war is still a very, very long shot.
Each time a set of soldiers are dispatched to combat them, it's certain that most of them die in battle.
Now, what's the point of murdering your own soldiers who refused to fight boko haram because you gave them insufficient weapons? Why murder them?
Forget about the military code of conduct, a civilian doesn't understand that term and the context here is that '54 soldiers have been sentenced to death because they refused to fight boko haram with insufficient weapons.' Simple and clear.
I'm calling on the federal government to please and please revert this decision. President Jonathan can do something about this.
It would be very unfortunate that we are killing the soldiers we have instead of mobilizing them adequately to counter terrorism for the safety of the nation.
Murdering these soldiers will simply make the terrorists stronger while we grow weaker in fear.
