BREAKING NEWS: DOGARA WINS SPEAKER AGAINST ALL ODDS

The Members of the House of Representatives have elected Yakubu Dogara, who represents Bogoro/ Tafawa Balewa federal constituency in Bauchi state, as the Speaker of the 8th National Assembly.

Dogara defeated Femi Gbajabiamila, of the Surulere 1 federal constituency, Lagos state, in a heavily contested election despite loosing out in the APC adoption of their sole candidate for the speaker.

Yakubu Dogara scored 182 votes to beat Femi Ggajabiamila who polled 174.

Dogara is emerging as speaker of the House of Representatives against all odds. His party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had on Saturday conducted a mock election to select Gbajabiamila as the party’s sole candidate.

Dogara and his supporters stormed out of the venue and ignored their party to go ahead to contest in the floor of the House where they said they will take the risk to be beaten there.

His chances to win the post received a boost early Tuesday when the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, adopted him as its candidate and advised its members to vote for the Bauchi lawmaker.

Dogara was the chairman House Services committee throughout the life of the last assembly.
